Get a Veterinarian Before You Have a Crisis

Whether you are considering a purchase of a new pet, already have one, or are even thinking about adopting a pet do you have a Veterinarian yet? You should because you might just need one before too long.

Some people think or should I say don’t think about the possibility that their pet will need a doctor sooner or later. I dare say it’s really no different than having your own doctor in your phonebook, but do you?  I think you should.

There are many reasons why so let’s take a look at some of the more important ones. First off if you just got your pet then it’s already time to take them to the vet. The most important first step is to develop this history with your vet so he has all the appropriate information on your new addition.

Like any newborn, checking to make sure your pet is healthy and getting the right nutrition is of the utmost concern for you. Making sure they don’t have any diseases or illnesses that need to be treated can be ruled out as well.

If it truly is your first pet and you don’t know much about taking care of all of their needs, the vet can provide this invaluable service to make sure that you do. It’s a proper venue for asking and getting answers to all your questions. They can also recommend any pet supplies you may need to facilitate taking care of your pet.

What about getting a good vet before you move to a new house, city or state? You know you’re going to need a vet at your new location so why not add it to the list of “things to do” before you move. By doing a little research now you can save the head ache latter on. Just because your pet is ok, what happens if they get sick or worse yet have an accident?

When you need a vet the most is not the time to start looking for one. It could be so serious that looking in the phonebook isn’t necessarily the way to go. What if it’s after hours? A phonebook won’t do much good. If you aren’t a patient chances are you won’t be able to get in contact with anyone.

By having a vet before hand, you’ll have the phone number of the vet that’s on call and where they have their office. If you’re in a new town and don’t know your way around this will only add more tension to an already stressful situation. What about resources or the vet you find in the book? Do they have the proper facilities to treat what might be wrong with them?

And finally if the pet was just adopted this is definitely the time to get a vet involved before they are really needed. Since you may not have their history, or if you do it may not be as complete as you like, trying to care of the animal at the same time they’re doing a workup on their fitness does not make for a good situation.

Having the chance to do a wellness check on your pet before a crisis sets in reduces the need for a battery of questions, and the possibility of overlooking a potential source of a problem. The point is you need to give the vet the best chance, in the shortest amount of time to help remedy the situation. For the sake of the pet get a vet at your earliest convenience. You’ll be glad you did and so will they.
